OK, I figured it out, if anyone's interested.
1) First, I renamed the OS 9 version to "Microsoft Entwhistle"
2) I then had the bemusing experience of seeing every script open get
recompiled to "Microsoft Entwhistle" even with Entourage X open and running.
3) I then remembered something about Script Debugger, quit it, relaunched
it, and now everything is OK.
I could rename the OS 9 version back to its correct name, and still compile
'recurrence'. Also, telling 'application "Microsoft Entourage" to launch'
now launches the X version.
So that's it: rename the OS 9 version on your HD and then compile a script
with the correct name. Do it in Script Editor or Smile, or quit and relaunch
Script Debugger between times. Then you can re-rename the OS 9 version.
This may or may not work the other direction, but I imagine it does.
