The walls are real, Darin. And there's no door. Not in OS X.
Here's a ridiculously kludgy workaround - make an empty folder somewhere
on your disk and set it to the view options that you want. Then use your
script to duplicate that folder, move the contents of the window whose
view you want to change to the new folder, change the name of the new
folder to the name of the old folder and move it to the location of the
original folder with replacing, and open it. If you have stored the
bounds of the original window, you can even put the new one in the same
place on screen, just as if you had simply changed its views.

Don't let anyone tell you that there's stuff you could do in OS 9 that
you can't do in OS X. You just have to work a little harder at it.
