A quick question regarding "path to" in OS X:

Getting the path to a users folder in OS X seems a bit convoluted. At the moment I'm getting the path to the users desktop and then taking a step back to get the users root folder ("~/" in unix land). Is there a way to get the user's root directory directly (and say that half a dozen time quickly)?
