in a stand-alone applet?
The slowness you're experiencing is probably to do with the time it takes
the applet to launch so that it can run its script for you.
You won't see this slowdown if you run scripts from a menu utility like OSA
menu or the OS X script menu (or any application's script menu), or with a
palette/dock utility like OneClick or DragThing. They should run just as
fast as they do from the script editor - and much faster in some cases.
You can also avoid the delay of applets launching by making them 'stay open'
- but that's not always practical.
