Dennis,
It seems no one responded so far to your question, so let me try to
offer a suggestion though it doesn't involve AppleScript. I'm working
quite extensively with Chinese, usually however, as far as wordprocessing
is concerned, I rely on Nisus to which I switched after WordPerfect was
no longer supported by Corell.
I'm not so familiar with AppleWorks but I tried the following and it
works with my setup (OS 9.0.4, AppleWorks 5.0.3). Go File>Macros>Record
Macro... , choose a name for the macro (e.g. the name of the font you use
for the Brazilian Portuguese part of your document), click "Record", and
then choose this font from the "Font" menu. Go back to File>Macros>Stop
Recording. Repeat this for Biaukai. Then create two buttons in your
button bar (you'll find the relevant instructions in "AppleWorks Help"
under the subject "Add buttons to a button bar") and relate them to one
of your two macros each.
When you come to a place in your document where you want to insert
Chinese characters, switch by pressing command and then space bar
(that's the usual method for rotating among the keyboards, no need to
involve the mouse) and then click on the Biaukai button. In order to get
back to Portugese, rotate the keyboard (command+space bar) and click your
other font button. Might be a clumsy method but since nobody else jumped
in with some AppleScript magic I thought this might offer at least some
relief.
Nisus is much nicer and flexible when it comes to multiple
languages, including right to left writing for Hebrew/Arabic. For
anything dealing with Chinese and the Macintosh, you might want to visit
http://www.yale.edu/chinesemac/. Hope this helps.
All the best,
Fritz
