Using Terminal, I find this consistently faster (YMMV):

Are you using this format in Connect to Server:

http://idisk.mac.com/username

If you don't specify http, it will connect via AFP, rather than webdav. If you mount your own iDisk by using the 'iDisk' item in the Go menu or mount someone's Public folder from a web browser, it will always use webdav, which is what goliath uses.
