Actually, the limit is ~65,000 files per volume but they could all be in one
folder. However, the Finder would choke on the folder if you were actually
able to put that many files in it. Literally, opening the folder would take
hours.
From a practical point of view, I try to limit the contents of a single
folder to about 1000 items. That seems to make accessing the folder take a
reasonable amount of time.

I think the folder limit is in the neighborhood of 65,535 items
per folder (not 100% sure though).
