I did try to use my own Sounds folder but Eudora wouldn't detect the

Eudora will recognise them if I have them in my/Library/Sounds/ --
not the Audio/Alerts/ directory. I'm using an alpha version that runs
under both OS, but I doubt if that should make a difference. Bear in
mind that Eudora loads everything at launch and never looks back, so
you have to quit and relaunch for her to suck up the new stuff. The
same goes for scripts, so if you want to test new scripts from the
script menu, it's best to create a few dummies first so that they
show up at launch. Then you can edit these and use them immediately
and wait till you quit to change their names as required.
I've complained to Steve Dorner many times about this, but nothing
ever gets done. We might have a Unicode text engine by 2010! All
the same, Eudora is still infinitely more scriptable than any other
mailer and always will be. It is now the only mailer that uses unix
mailboxes on what is now a unix machine. You can even get it to read
and send news, to send Unicode mail or html mail of your own design
etc etc. Without its scriptability it might have begun to look a bit
tired, but for me it still heads the field.
