Eudora will recognise them if I have them in my/Library/Sounds/ --
not the Audio/Alerts/ directory. I'm using an alpha version that
runs under both OS, but I doubt if that should make a difference.
Bear in mind that Eudora loads everything at launch and never looks
back, so you have to quit and relaunch for her to suck up the new
stuff. The same goes for scripts, so if you want to test new
scripts from the script menu, it's best to create a few dummies
first so that they show up at launch. Then you can edit these and
use them immediately and wait till you quit to change their names as
required.
When I placed the aiff file in ~/Library/Sounds/, Eudora would not
see it, even after restarting the computer. This is the latest
release of Eudora running under OS X 10.1.5. Since you are reporting
different behavior, maybe I'll do some more testing before submitting
a Eudora bug report.
I've complained to Steve Dorner many times about this, but nothing
ever gets done. We might have a Unicode text engine by 2010! All
the same, Eudora is still infinitely more scriptable than any other
mailer and always will be. It is now the only mailer that uses unix
mailboxes on what is now a unix machine. You can even get it to
read and send news, to send Unicode mail or html mail of your own
design etc etc. Without its scriptability it might have begun to
look a bit tired, but for me it still heads the field.
I sometimes wonder what the future holds for Eudora. I'd still like
to see an option to trigger a script with a filter. I once questioned
one of the engineers on the Eudora development team about this (on a
Eudora mailing list) and he stated that they were concerned with the
possible security risk that this might create. I don't see it as much
of a risk myself, and I've not heard about anything terrible which
has happened as a result of this feature in other email programs.
JD: Thanks for the "Reply to..." script!
