You would probably have to muck around in
/private/var/db/SystemConfigation/preferences.xml as well, though doing so
would be not be a good thing because that would be circumventing the configd
daemon, the process responsible for notifying other processes of
configuration changes.

There is a System Configuration Framework API for doing this in Cocoa (Mac
OS 10.1 or later), beyond the scope of AppleScript.
