I've managed to track down the problem to the fact the other user was using
Applescript version 1.7

I think version 1.7, according to apple, was made more OSX friendly, but
this meant that some scripts written in 1.6 which referenced paths no longer
worked in 1.7. If you have 1.8.3 installed then scripts written in 1.6 still
work

The other persons computer had 1.7 on so I got them to upgrade to 1.8.3 and
the script now works fine
