So far as I remember, in 8.6 you could

tell app "Finder" to get item (folder?) id nnnnn of disk x

and certainly this syntax doesn't work in OS X, but Eudora still uses a folder id for its attachments folder under OS X and it still works, so there must be a way. Unfortunately I've lost the scripts that I used to use for this thing.
