If the temporary items convention follows that used in some other
versions of UNIX, it can be that "OS X HD:private:tmp:501:" is a
storage location for active memory cache file(s), in which case the
system would refuse to permit you access to it. Just a hunch...
Have you rebooted in OS 9.2.x and looked at the physical contents of
the folder?
