Unstable Finder after quit & relaunch

I have a couple of scripts that quit and relaunch the Finder in Jaguar
10.2.2. I'm finding that the Finder is unstable after relaunching in this
way--if I try to click on a file, like as not the Finder will crash. Is
there a "safe" way to quit and relaunch the Finder that will not cause this
instability?
