Having renewed my acquaintanceship with Alpha by checking out the Alpha 8 beta (and yep, rectangular selection is option-select), I see it has an Applescript mode (scpt) if you're in system 8 or 9 (doesn't function properly in classic mode).
Two comments about it
- The control- tab autocompletion feature is set to add templates (for tell, if, etc) and keywords it recognizes.
- The most reliable way for me to get it working was to use Config - Preferences - Menus to load the applescript menu on startup.
