Background-only applets?

Greetings.

How can I make an applet that doesn't bring itself to the front but runs only in the background? E.g., if I write an applet for Apple's speech recognition software that launches when I say "thank you", the Finder shouldn't move to the front before launching the applet so I can hear "you're welcome", which would leave the Finder in the front in the end and not the application that had been in front before I spoke. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Aaron
