To answer my own question... ;-)


It turns out that there IS a scripting addition that allows you to
type-as-user a function key, AutoType:

This absolutely wonderful osaxen picks up where Sandi, Sigma, and
Akua left off, (with regard to typing keystrokes, anyway). :)

At $5 shareware, it's an absolute bargain, and I highly recommend
it to anyone with advanced "typing" needs in AppleScript.
