It looks like all the built-in QXP coercions fail under OS X outside Classic
applets and Classic script editors. The only workaround I can think of is to
use the explicit "coerce" command every time. Not particularly cheery news.
I wonder whether the same problem exists in version 5...

I'm afraid I don't follow you, but I'd suggest trying the "coerce" option.
