It seems the same in TE+. I gradually worked that out for myself, after
fruitlessly trying to 'set' the insertion point in a dozen different
ways. It slowly dawned on me that I should treat it as just another
element of the document (like a character or line) and 'select' it,
rather than trying to set it.
Which doesn't really explain anything. I think there must be something
screwy in Tex-Edit Plus's idea of where the insertion point is.
Or it could be one of those quantum thingies that changes it's nature
when you observe it, because the following two lines both have the same
result as the original line I posted, moving the insertion point
backwards one character (reducing it's numerical value by 1):
select insertion point after insertion point (insertion point of window
1) of window 1
select insertion point before insertion point (insertion point of
window 1) of window 1
The line that finally returned a constant value was:
select insertion point after character after insertion point (insertion
point of window 1) of window 1
All of which is highly illogical, Captain.
Hailing frequencies open.

PS. I'm awfully sorry. I have no idea why this message suddenly
transmogrified itself into a full-blown Star Trek tribute. I'd better
take some more of my medicine.
