Easy way: just set up a database and type in and adumbrate the "marks" by
hand


Hard way: scan the books, have the scan program dump out the "marks" as
additional picture information in MS Word or similar application (ABBYY will
do this) then try and make sense of it all.

AppleScript will probably not be much help here,
