That's the software biz for you. Management walks the fine line between
marketing (or worse yet -- Steve Jobs) and reality.
I do not even wish to know what pressures Apple engineers are subject to
these days. They not only have the same OS X learning curve, but they have
to ensure backward compatibility while at the same time integrating all the
vast changes happening in core OS technologies. Oh shit, nevermind, that
sounds like the rest of us too.
My only Apple culture anectdote: I used to go to lunch with some friends at
Apple. I noticed when I visited them that they would take the stairs down,
but ride the elevator up. Not just one of them, all of them would do it. I
finally asked why. "Well, Steve's offices are on the top floor, and
according to rumors, he's been known to fire employees on the spot for not
answering his questions correctly. Going down the stairs eliminates being
stuck in the elevator with him."
How do you answer the question: "What are you doing for Apple, and why
shouldn't I fire you?"
