It's hard to be without osaxen in X, but that's not exactly Apple's fault.
It's also not exactly NOT Apple's fault.
At least, I had the foresight to announce long ago that my (few, relatively
uninteresting) osaxen would not be rebuilt for PowerPC (much less later
developments). Can't blame Apple for that...it's my laziness.
But Apple could have made it easier to start the conversion sooner. That
might have gotten us Jon's commands by now, for one. (The same can be said
of applications: Carbon has been a moving target far too long [and I don't
know whether the impending* CarbonLib 1.5 is the last of the line or not].)
*or is it out? I've been sick.
Now...to the subject of the message: I'm keeping 9.1 on my 7300, at least
until/unless something later comes along that officially installs on it...I
wouldn't mind if the machine were to end its days at 9.1. (But not soon,
despite my lust for the early Winter 2002 <before groundhog day> iMac.)
[The only crash I've had in 9.1 was when I forgot for a couple of weeks to
do my prophylactic Sunday evening reboot...after forgetting twice, I
decided to see how far I could push it (answer: 29 days, although flakiness
set in at about 27 days...the machine is actively used about 12 hours a
day).]
I'm at 9.2.2 on both 9 installations on my dual 5300 (the freestanding one
and the one on the Mac OS X partition, which I use for Classic). The
unsullied 9 survived all of Mac OS X's relentless attempts to cause me to
slip up and let it put the classic stuff into it; fixed in recent Mac OS X,
thank goodness. I might or might not revert the AppleScript version in
that partition when Chris's recent announcement that I'll official have the
option to revert comes to pass: I don't script much there anyhow.
I would not recommend going to 9.2 on a machine which does not have Mac OS
X, absent a powerful reason to...others will differ.
