Subject: Text encoding convertions
To: email@hidden
From: "Jens Eliasson" <email@hidden>

Hi,
Does anybody now how to handle text convertion using the encodings in the
OS? If it's possible, is there an osax or some other way?

It is very nice with the fairly new data type "Unicode text", but to me
there's not really any use for it without the possibility to coerce to and
from it using the existing engine for that in the OS. And now I need it
for a project.

I do know how to make scripts that do conversions, but that means making
my own tables etc. I don't want to do that when they allready exist, first
because it seems stupid - besides the work and responsibility it creates.

My question is especially regarding AppleScript in OS X.

Thanks for any help/

Dear Jens,

I am sure you have already received many similar replies, but I would recommend Hideki Iimori's TEC OSAX. I use it dozens of times a day to convert between UTF8 and other encodings, and it is very reliable. It works on any Mac hardware or software, including OSX. The latest version is 1.3.2. You can download it from the following page on Iimori-san's site:

http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~iimori/sw/TECOSAX.html

Much of the page is in Japanese but the link "TEC OSAX Ver1.3.2 " downloads the .hqx file. The documentation in the package all seems to be in Japanese as well (strange, I think there used to be English docs too). But the scripting dictionary explanations, which are in English, should tell you all you need to know. If you need any help please ask me (or Iimori-san himself, of course).

Best wishes,
