Hi David,
you're right: from what I heard, the XTensions from Callas Software
are expensive. But if they are used in the right environment and for
a high output then you get your investment back in no time at all.
On the other hand, when the sizes of the documents vary a lot and
the fonts are changing endlessly then it's hard to entertain an
automated solution.
That's why the colleagues from our ad department print directly to
a spooler. The PS files end up in the "In" folder of the Distiller
and the PDF files are generated at once.
The PDF files are copied to the corresponding folder. The OPI system
generates layout files which are imported by the layouters. We never
import HiRes PDF files in an XPress page.
