Sven,
You have heard Goodman is good. I've always heard that, but don't have
his book. As to comments re some others from a
not-a-novice-but-still-not-expert scripter:

Applied Mac Scripting
I made the mistake of judging this book by its thickness, but found it
devotes more than half of its bulk to Frontier. AppleScript section is
OK, but oddly spotty in terms of developing concepts in logical sequence.

Scripting)
Some very good basic programming logic and tutorial-type exercises, but
probably not much to get you past the newbie stage.

Applescript Language Guide; English Dialect
Probably a good idea to have, but it's available as a free downloadable
PDF, which has advantages besides the price (searchable with "Find" right
on your 'puter, and you can copy/paste snippets of code).
Realize that all the books you mention are very old, and, while many
basic concepts are still the same, there's going to be serious gaps and
some outright errors in books of this age.
For my money, the best scripting book I've come across is "AppleScripting
QuarkXPress" by Shirley W. Hopkins (available at amazon.com for ~ $40).
If you have Quark, you would find this book pays for itself almost
instantly (comes w/CD too, so you don't have to retype book's scripts).
It's important to note that this book uses Quark exclusively, but is
organized in such a way so as to clearly explain and illustrate many
scripting concepts which can be applied to any scripting situation. It
will aid in your scripting across the board.
Another book that is much more current and filled with examples for many,
many applications is a Peachpit Press book by Ethan Wilde. . . .
Actually, I paste a recent quote from this list:

I haven't had a chance to see the "for Applications" one yet, but have
found the "for the Internet" volume very good indeed.
HTH,
Dan Feather (who could sell Trinko's and Schneider's books cheap if
someone really wants 'em)
