While packaging up the file and an Apple System Profiler report, I found the
problem. I'm still shaking my head - at myself and at the error. Perhaps I'm
violating some sort of programming standard, but while working on scripts I
often add ".app" to the filename so that I know that I've saved the file as
an applet. Even though I'm only using 9.1, not OS X, I often do this with
image filesQuark documents, etc. When I was gathering up the file to email I
renamed it but left off ".app".
I then proceeded to test a couple of other applets and started scratching my
head when they worked fine. I went back to the problem script, now renamed,
and tried to run it...and it worked! A bit of thinking and I figured out it
was the ".app". It's probably replicable on other systems - just try adding
".app" to your applets filename. For some reason, with AppleScript 1.8.3 it
doesn't like having that. I have both OS X and 9.1 installed so maybe the
".app" is trying to pull something from the OS X system...
My kudos to Apple for the quick response on this. I haven't seen anything
else posted yet about this so maybe I get bragging rights when I see a
Knowledge Base note about AppleScripters who don't name files properly. :-)

Is it just this applet or are others generally affected?

Previous Installers don't install over later versions. The best thing
