Does that mean it does what you wanted? ;-)

Just a lucky guess, I suppose - but I'm delighted if it does the trick for
you, Rachel!

Just goes to show we shouldn't believe everything we read Andy! ;-)
I have to confess that I didn't check the dictionary - so I wasn't
constrained by that belief that it couldn't be done. (I'm afraid it's the
same with help files, manuals and training - all very much a last resort
when discipline is so seriously lacking!)

Right. OMM, I note that if the Progress window is hidden before a connection
is made, and activated after connecting, then the progress bar display won't
'spring' open. Whatever triggers this action during connection seems to need
a visible window to act on (which is understandable). Conversely, after I'm
connected - and the progress bars have already been revealed, toggling the
visibility of the Progress window seems pretty much like any other window.

At the end of the day, I suppose it depends what one is trying to do with
such a script. Vanilla is good enough for my purposes here (and I hope for
Rachel's) but - if the Progress bar thing is critical, then I guess it's
back to the ice cream shop! :-P
