to be precise, on Mac OS X, from AppleScript's (and
Finder's) perspective, "/" is legal.

i think that's all that's necessary for Martin's purpose,
but in the shell and in code at the BSD level, "/" takes the
place of ":" as the directory path delimiter, so the two
characters swap roles, and legality. (you can put a colon in
a name in the shell, and it will appear as a slash in
Finder.)
