problems with german characters

in my script I use following commands:

set this_folder to choose folder
set this_folder to this_folder as string

If the folders name contains one of german characters (d, v, |) I get Script
Error:
Can't make alias "Macintosh HD:Desktop Folder:Gr|n:" into a string.

Does anyone knows why?
Is that a bug in german version? I use german System 9.2.2 and AppeScript
1.7.
