Bit of a sticky one in X, Phil.
I currently use iTunes, which is great for playing sounds with scripts in X
if you're not using it for anything else (although a tad overspecified for
such a little job).
iTunes is loaded into my login items with the 'hide' box checked. I've got a
'system sounds' playlist that I can play items from with scripts. iTunes
remains hidden while it plays them.
If you are using iTunes to listen to internet radio or local sound files,
playing another sound will stop whatever else was going playing. Which is a
shame. I haven't tried running a script that asks iTunes to play a sound
while it's converting a sound file or *ulp* burning a CD. That would be just
asking for trouble.
What's needed is a small, scriptable 'Simple Sound' like utility that can
play anything you ask it to at the drop of a hat. Maybe one exists already,
but I haven't stumbled across it yet.
Let me know if you find anything. It would be good to relieve iTunes of this
trivial chore.
