Mount Volume woes

I am trying to script the mounting of a remote Appleshare volume
("MakeRain").

From my Pismo (9.1, AS 1.8.2b3), the process works exactly as expected.
From my colocated iMac server (9.1, AS 1.5.5), the process chokes.
I am able to manually mount MakeRain just fine from the colo iMac.
I am using the same Applescript code on both machines.
I am attempting to connect as the owner in both cases.

I have tested the process from other machines with AS 1.5.5, one on a remote
network, one on the same network as MakeRain, using TCP/IP rather than
AppleTalk. Both work fine. The problem is only occurring from the colo iMac.

Even attempting to open an alias to MakeRain fails when done from the colo
iMac. I have noticed an interesting thing. When I create an alias to MakeRain
on the colo iMac, the Get Info for the alias shows the original at
"*:BackSaw:MakeRain", as if MakeRain were on the local network (it is not).
When I create an alias to MakeRain on my Pismo (or any of the other
machines), the original is "BackSaw:MakeRain" - no asterisk !

Copying (via TB2) a working MakeRain alias to the colo iMac does not result
in a working alias there.

The ISP claims that all ports are open (except ICMP, as protection from DOS
ping attacks). So, my questions are:

1) Why would the alias make it look like MakeRain is on the local network?

2) Does Mount Volume require ICMP?

3) Any chance a Cisco router is at fault?

4) Any other ideas?

TIA.
