Dear Mike,
First, we need to know which operating system is being run -- the answers
for OS X are often radically different than for 8.6 - 9.2.2; also need to
know which version of AppleScript you are running. Please post the answers to
the list, so everyone can take a stab at helping you.
Now to try to answer some of your questions (after getting your responses to
the above, there will be more concise answers from everyone):
1. Run-time settings. Under OS X, you should be able to use the Cron function
to specify a runtime. Under OS 8.6 - 9.2.2, you either have to use a
third-party app to trigger it (such as QuicKeys), or cheat by making the
script a start-up item and setting the machine to shut down & start-up using
the energy saver control panel.
2. Reformatting mail/text files to change/correct characters -- which program
would you like to do this in? The answers for how to do it to text files in
BBEdit is different than how to go about it in Entourage/AOL/etc. Generally,
in both cases, it will be a search and replace.
Hope that helps. More info on your situation = better answers to your
questions.
