Determining the 'nextmost' process...

Hello:
This has probably been patiently answered lebenty-leben times already,
but...
Is there a way - once a script (application) process has been launched
from a given 'frontmost' app - for the script to determine what that
(immediately previous) frontmost process was?
In this peculiar instance, a script _application_ must be used. (Though
I don't even know if an osas script, run from a menu, would avoid the
problem).
As a specific example, I want to run a script on a particular window of
another app, but I want the app to list windows first. Once the script
becomes the frontmost app, how can it determine which was the 'nextmost'
process?
There is an added dimension to the problem... I can filter the active
processes for _one_ process and tell it to do something, but I'm trying
to make a certain script 'universal' to/for several applications... any
one of which might have been the 'nextmost'.
As it stands, the script asks the user to choose from a list of the
possible applications as having been the frontmost... which is more than
a little clunky.
It's all a bit difficult to explain... I hope someone has an idea what
I'm shooting for.
Thanks much for any help.
