All wrong. I'm sorry in more ways than one. When I next booted up things went back to normal - the way it doesn't work for me. I don't understand why but it probably has to do with my login scripts which never got re-executed after Apple's automatic updater did its thing. I had been resetting some environment variables - like PATH trying to get things to work my way.
