I think you'll find that if you import the whole image _and_ the thumbnail
you can maintain the thumbnail image. Then all you need to do is make sure
your main layout only contains the thumbnail field and NOT the image field
(because if you have the _'real' picture field it will be sloooowwwww).

The best solution is to get the Imago plugin from www.abstrakt.com. It
generates it's own thumbnail and imports it, along with a plethora of other
picture information, into the db. It's fast and efficient but only available
for OS9 at present (I think).
