Is there any way to drive the MySQL database server that's part of OS X from AppleScript?

Part of OS X? I was told that it was necessary to download and install it.

You're both right ;)

It comes installed on Mac OS X Server, but you can download great packages for it on Mac OS X (client).

As for interfacing with it, I'd go the shell script route, because that is the most direct way. FileMaker might be the next best, as it provides ODBC support.
