Is there any way to drive the MySQL database server that's part of OS
X from AppleScript?

You can AppleScript the program SQLGrinder (which connects to MySQL via JDBC) - probably cheaper than using Filemaker (if purchasing licenses new). There is quite an extensive dictionary available.
