The short answer is that I don't have a license for OS 9.1 on my 8500. I do have two copies resulting from purchase of a powerbook and a G4 but neither can be installed on the 8500. Given Steve's entombment of OS 9 I'm not even sure I could purchase it now, but of course I wouldn't spend cash for that anyway.
But. . . thanks to the suggestion. . .
I copied the system folder of OS9.1 from my G4 to the 8500 using an MPW backup procedure to get all of the hidden files. The resulting system folder appeared blessed but it wouldn't boot on the 8500. I then executed, on the 8500, the 9.0 to 9.1 updater which I downloaded from Apple long ago. The result was a bootable disk on the 8500 running 9.1. I had a bunch of work to change the machine name and IP address - I use a router with manual IP assignments so I can handle Tektronix oscilloscopes, home-made devices, and peecees.
The next step is to install AS 1.8.3 and see if it works. I am confident that Baumann is right.
Am I doing anything illegal? I have bought Jaguar and perhaps I will be able to use it on the G4 while my 8500 takes on the scheduled operations. Does anyone remember when the MacOS was freely available in all versions?
