Doug,
The version of Script Editor does not always equal the version of AS. In
MacOS 8.6, I believe the AS version is 1.3.7. Do a Get Info on the
Applescript Extension (in your Extensions folder) itself to be sure, and just
for grins, double check the version of your Standard Additions.
What's keeping you from upgrading the 8500 to MacOS 9.1 (I know you can't get
to 9.2 on an 8500)? AS 1.8.3 works fine with MacOS 9.1, as does the latest
URL Access stuff.
Moving stuff from 9.1/9.2 into 8.6 would be an "unsupported configuration",
and I doubt Apple would have anything on their site discussing it. You can be
adventurous and experiment yourself, maybe posting your findings to a helpful
Web page, but keep in mind that you may damage your system, forcing a system
re-install and providing the impetus to move up to 9.1 anyway.

AppleScript 1.8.3 is running on the G4 - or at least that's what About
Script Editor seems to say.

Can I safely install AS 1.8.3 on MacOS 8.6? Can I install URL Access
