Reminds me also that unless I've missed something blatantly obvious, there is no "Next Message" command.

Typing the spacebar pages down in the current message, then goes to the next message. Shift or Option reverses the direction.

Thanks, that is better but...

I'd find it more convenient if the focus could stay in the message area (not the list area). And further that there be an option for enabling the cursor so that the standard arrow keys could be used for navigation and selection. The idea being that while of course the message is read only, there's more benefit to the user who prefers keyboard over mouse to be able to use the arrows to (for example):

* Navigate and select a passage
* Copy
* Command-Tab to another app
* Paste
* Return to Mail
* Delete the message

and then have the cursor positioned at the top of the new active message. This would also be convenient for replying to selected portions of a message.

Unfortunately, I don't see a way to restrict this to the next/previous unread message, and I'd like that to also go to the next/previous folder.

Yes, and in this respect, I'd like to follow the more or less standard (text editor) conventions for {Command [,Option]} + Arrows for navigation and selection, and branch to either {Control [,Option]} + Arrows or {Control [,Option]} + '<' or '>' for the message and folder navigation.

Then there wouldn't be confusing usage of the arrow and modifier keys changing from one app to another or even within Mail itself. 'Bout the only thing to understand would be that messages are read only, replies can be edited.
