Networking control panel refresh

The Networking Control panel for Mac OS is a bit perplexing to me when it comes to it's refreshing of it's settings on-screen. I'm wondering if there's something I can do in Applescript to help it along.

For instance, if I have a Mac on a corporate ethernet network, retrieving it's DHCP and router info from the corporate DHCP server, and then I unplug that Ethernet cable and plug in a DSL router - - at what point should I see the new DHCP setting visible in the Network control panel? Is there a way to get Applescript to do an immediate "refresh" of the networking control panel? I find that if I go into the control panel and manually flip back and forth between Manual IP and DHCP, that seems to help the Mac "wake up" and obtain it's new DHCP and router IP settings.
