OS X Folder Action Hiccup
OS X Folder Action Hiccup

It's great to have folder actions back in OS X 10.2, but the implementation
seems a little rough.
Specifically, the front app loses focus momentarily whenever anything
'actionable' happens to a folder with a script attached. The resultant
changes in shadow effects & window title-bar opacity, and the momentary
disappearance of app-specific palettes and toolbars are the visual
equivalent of a loud hiccup, and quite disconcerting.
This apparently happens whenever System Events checks to see if it needs to
run an attached action, and not just when the action runs. So if a folder
has an 'on opening' action attached, I also get the hiccup every time I move
stuff into or out of it, or save something into it from (eg) TextEdit, or
close it. Similarly, if a folder has an 'on adding items' action, I get the
hiccup every time I open or close it (or remove stuff from it).
Then there's the 'double hiccup'. Some of my most useful folder actions move
stuff on to other locations. With these, I get a hiccup when items are
added, and an additional hiccup when the folder action forwards them. It's
pretty ugly.
Is there some scripting equivalent of the cold metallic item down the back
of the shirt or drinking from the wrong side of the glass that I can use to
alleviate these hiccups?
One other slightly troubling thing cropped up while I was testing the above.
I saved a document out of TextEdit into a folder with an 'add' action
attached. The action script told the Finder to activate, which it did while
the script was running, but then TextEdit popped back to the fore. Surely it
shouldn't've.
Regards & eructations
Nick
