I can do this too, with another, very short script ("beep"). But with the
script in question, I can't. So maybe there's a connection to using some
particular syntax element?

I just ran another test which I believe eliminates any possible Script
Debugger connection. I copied the text of the script to the clipboard, quit
Script Editor, reopened Script Editor, pasted it into a new script, and
saved it as an application. Then I tried to save it as a compiled script,
and I got the same error. (I'm not overwriting, by the way, but saving to a
different name.)

BEST TEST OF ALL: I just moved the text to another computer and ran all
these tests over there. Same error! So it has to be a particular syntax
element, doesn't it?

Somebody else has suggested I have an incipient disk failure on my hands,
but for a variety of reasons I thought not -- and that last test on another
machine seals that issue.
