Just the opposite is true. The AppleScript through up a dialog to tell the
operator of a major problem and, after waiting 30 seconds, dismissed the
dialog and got on with things (sent alert emails, Timbuktu flashnotes,
restarted the box, whatever).

Notifications have never been implemented for AppleScript (at least not by
Apple).
