That was one of two primary original goals of AppleScript, as I recall it:
interapplication communication. It's still a great feature.

The second was plain-English scripting. None of the shell script/Unix
scripts offers that to the degree AppleScript does. I've never thought this
feature was nearly as important as IAC, but my experience is that the
plain-English scripting thing does have some pluses for many people.
