I use to do that too, but with FileMaker 6, you can import thumbnail, picture and file name all at once with an import script (and yes you can do just 1, like just thumbnail). It will even import a whole folder of pictures this way (and subfolders too)
I know that upgrading might not be what you were looking for, but it would be more elegant.
