QuickTime and AppleScript

I am looking for a more elegant solution to place thumbnails in a FMP database under OS 10.2. I'd like to compress the images within AppleScript (or a native OSX app) and feed them into the database. Right now, I'm using boring old clip2gif, which doesn't really allow me to compress anything!
