I don't think that that scriptability in the Finder is to be
deprecated in any way. As I understood it the finder now instructs the
System Events application to handle the file system manipulations. This
frees the finder to respond to the user. No beachball. Sorta.
The increased speed of the functions is, I believe, a product of the
routines being rewritten in System Events. Further increases can be
achieved by instructing the System Events app directly and saving a few
Apple Event transmissions.

I was told by the "other Chris" back in May that AS 2.0 (now called AS
X????) would allow us to address files, disks, folders, etc "without
involving the Finder". He also warned us that it would mean reworking
a
lot of what we'd been doing in 1.x.
Does that mean that scriptability in the Finder is to be deprecated/no
longer supported? Or just that they've provided new file system
functions
in the language itself that'll reduce reliance on the Finder for such
tasks?
