Tolerance of text from download command

I'm finding that Applescript is sending my EMPTY results from certain CGI
requests that I have. I suspect that this is because of a bad character at
the beginning of the returned results, and that Applescript's tolerance
within the download command for non-perfect HTML causes it to throw the whole
data-set away. The reason I believe this is because I can go to the same
URL in IE, and it displays the returned data just fine. (but it displays a
dash "-" at the very beginning - - - I wonder if Applescript is choking on
that dash.

This is the command that I use:

download "http://10.0.0.138/cgi/ISP/GetPPPoEStatus.cgi"; to file "xmldata.txt"
replacing yes

and here's what I get back in IE:

- <pppoe_status>
<sync>test1</sync>
<error_no>0000000</error_no>
<error_desc>NO ERROR</error_desc>
</pppoe_status>

The data is correct, and unfortunately the dash that appears in the returned
result is not within my control (comes from a piece of networking hardware).
Is there anything that I can do in Applescript to permit Applescript to
download this HTTP CGI-request?

Am I out of luck? Is there another URL accessing tool I could use?
