Michelle,

It seems quixotic because it doesn't seem consistent, and its results don't
agreed with the number of items displayed by the finder itself.
Also it is different sometimes while the container is opened by the finder,
if I add an item to the container you get a different item count than you
would after closing the container (a folder in my example).

Eg for a folder the finder states that their are 12 items, but entire
contents seems to see only 10 items. If I move items about I can get the
same item count.

In the following code "2" is a folder on the desktop:

tell application "Finder"
set r to entire contents of container "2"
set n to count r
end tell
